Joannie
Shen
Dr. Shen received her M.D. from the University of Southern California
School of Medicine, and Ph.D. in Health Services /Health Policy from
the UCLA School of Public Health. She was a clinical scholar at the
UCLA-RAND program, and taught clinical medicine at the UCLA Medical
Center prior to her commission to the National Institutes of Health
(NIH) in 1998. She was also a good will ambassador representing the
State of California on several international delegations.
She is currently a Medical Epidemiologist at the US FDA and a
Commander of the United States Public Health Service. She was a
Senior Clinical Investigator at the NIH (from 1998 to 2005) and
recipient of the 2003 J.D. Lane Clinical Investigator Award from
the US Surgeon General, in recognition of her contribution in original
health research. She also served as an expert consultant for the
RAND Corporation’s Center for Evidence-Based Medicine.
Dr. Shen is very proud of her cultural and ethnic heritage, and
enjoys her life experience a great deal as an Asian American, as
a physician, a scientist, and a public health officer.
