Jeremy S. Wu
Dr. Jeremy S. Wu is currently Project Director
for LEHD, in the Demographic Surveys Division at the U.S. Census
Bureau; prior to that, he served as Acting Chief Statistician
at the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. He was Director of
the Departmental Office of Civil Rights at the U.S. Department
of Transportation from 2002 to 2003, serving as the principal
advisor to Secretary Norman Mineta on civil rights and equal
opportunity issues.
From 2000 to 2002, Dr. Wu served as National Ombudsman for
the U.S. Department of Energy, responsible for building trust
and leading change to advance a diverse, respectful, and productive
workplace and to handle the workforce crisis in Los Alamos
and other national laboratories in the aftermath of the Dr.
Wen Ho Lee scandal.
From 1997 to 2000, Dr. Wu served as Deputy Director, Office
of Civil Rights, in the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA),
where he was responsible for administration, information technology,
and complaint processing. He became the first Asian Pacific
American career senior executive in USDA in 1997, after serving
15 years as Chief of the Statistics Branch for the Marketing
Program at USDA. Dr. Wu participated in extended research and
negotiations with China on U.S. wheat exports from the Pacific
Northwest, leading to China lifting its wheat embargo in 1999.
Dr. Wu earned his doctorate degree in Mathematical Statistics
from the George Washington University. He served three terms
as Chair of the Asian American Government Executives Network.
Dr. Wu was born in Hong Kong and speaks fluently in Cantonese
and Mandarin. He is married to the former Deanie Pin and lives
in McLean, Virginia.
